How to make sparkling wine?


In addition to the traditional method, there are several other methods used to make sparkling wine, each with its own unique characteristics and advantages:

1. Sparkling wine Tank method (Charmat method):

This method is often used to make sparkling wines like Prosecco.

The secondary fermentation tank takes place in large stainless steel tanks rather than in individual bottles.

This method is faster and less labor-intensive than the traditional method, making it more cost-effective.

The winery fermentation tank method generally produces fresh, fruity wines, but with less complexity than wines made by the traditional method.

2. Transfer method:

This method begins similarly to the traditional method, with the secondary fermentation taking place in the bottle.

Once fermentation is complete, the wine is transferred to commercial wine storage tanks, filtered to remove sediment, and then re-bottled.

The transfer method retains some of the complexity of the traditional method, but is more suitable for large-scale production.

3. Traditional method (spontaneous fermentation or natural method):

This is one of the oldest methods of making sparkling wine.

Bottle the wine before the primary fermentation is fully completed, so that the fermentation process continues in the bottle.

Wines produced using this method are generally more rugged, less variable, and have a naturally cloudy appearance due to the presence of lees.

4. Continuous fermentation (Russian fermentation):

Similar to tank fermentation, but the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in a series of interconnected tanks.

The wine is continuously fermented in a cycle, which speeds up the fermentation and aging process.

This method is less common, but can be used for large-scale production.

5. Carbonation:

The simplest and cheapest method is to inject carbon dioxide directly into the still wine.

This method is often used to produce less expensive sparkling wines and will form larger but shorter-lasting bubbles.
